Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
The salmon river continues to fish well. One day hot one day OK. Lot's and lots of fish but some are beginning to spawn and many have been well educated. You have to work for them now and know what you are doing.
Blue egg sacs, stoneflies, & egg imitations are the ticket. With the lower flows you will find fish about anywhere right now. Just fish the water you like and be patient.
Martin and his lovely wife Joanne came south from Canada to brave the cold temps and hot fishing. It was one of those days you dream about. We were into fish all day long. As George O'brien says, It was steelheading 101!
A day fit for kings & queens.
The Oswego river is rolling and has been un-fishable except behind the hotel. Try bucktail jigs and minnows. Look for this river to drop all week and it should fish good any day now.

This latest warming trend is just what is needed to jumpstart the fishing. For now all of our streams and rivers are too high for fishing. We should be able to start fishing are smaller strains sometime early to mid next week. The way things are looking it will be at least a full week before Oak Orchard water flow settles down and clears up enough for fishing. The Genesee River will take considerably longer before water flows go back down to fishable levels. Most of the rivers and streams in western New York need to have regular fluctuations in water flows to maintain the fishing. Weather may change back to cold be for our streams and rivers are fishing again. The fishing should be worth the effort.
How about this for an update!
As I type this I just got off the cell phone with my son- in- law. He is on the pond spanking big perch. He has been there about an hour and has a ½ of a bucket already. 10 FOW of the Wigwam.
Chaumont Bay Sandy Pond and Black Lake continues to produce great catches of perch.
Sandy Pond is giving up some nice size pike as well. Large shiners and jigs in 10 to 20 FOW are working best.
On Oneida lake Reports of good to excellent walleye and perch catches are coming in from Dunham and Frenchman Islands, Buoy 121 and to the east at Lewis Point. Most anglers are jigging with Swedish Pimples dressed with a buckeye minnow or a jigging Rapala enhanced with bait. The sonar is also accounting for a few walleyes. Yellow perch are responding to mousies and spikes fished with more finesse than the typical heavy handed jigging for walleyes.
