Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
High Water Season 2009
If you follow my reports you know I love high water. But every few years we get to the point where safety can be an issue and the guests you have booked are not comfortable or perhaps we can still catch fish, but not where or how they would prefer to do it. That is my story. I am home for a few days catching up on things while the Salmon River is pumping close to 5,000 cfs, it is raining heavy and we have a winter Storm Watch out for later today and tonight. Just what we need more rain.

Over the past week we have still experienced some excellent fishing. We have floated the rivers, walked a few streams, did a road trip and found fish some everywhere we went.
We all know the tribs are choked with fish and when we get through this period of flood water, it will be the best fishing of the year.

Pat was very concerned about the water flows before it went to 3,800 but I convinced him we would do fine and he experienced the best steelhead fishing of his life.
Big numbers this day1
Frank & Jim did their thing and again we lost count of how many we hooked.
Gary & Mike were up on their annual Spring Pilgrimage we didn't do big numbers like other years, as the cold front had moved in and the water was on the rise big time. At 9 AM when we were 2 for 6 and they said, boy Troy, things are tough today, I knew I had spoiled them in the past. We still ended up in double digit hook-ups not bad for the adverse conditions.
Ralph and Chris were up for the big guys birthday weekend and we managed to get a few on Saturday from the boat and took a road trip on Sunday and found a few more. Real tough weekend but they both landed fish both days.
Today & Tuesday, We cancelled. Steve & Kathy were looking forward to a relaxing enjoy the day float trips and it wasn't going to be that way. We decided to call the days and I will see them in November.
Today& Tuesday; magazine work, paper work, boat work, haircut, dump, phone calls, e-mails, tie eggs, tie flies, and get the lake boats ready. Nothing like a day or two off.
I have some days in late May for browns and walleye, want to talk about it. I am home.

We finally gut what we desperately needed, rain. The steelheads wear getting sun burn and line shy, from the low water. Friday throw Saturday we get over 1 1/2 inches of rain. All this rain has blown out all the smaller area streams. The Oak Orchard River water flow has increased by more than 2 feet as of Saturday the water clarity was a heavy stained. I suspect the water flow on the Oak will crest Sunday, by Monday the water flow should be fishable. Water clarity is going to be an issue; we are going to be fishing and high muddy conditions through this coming week. For now the water temperature is at 46 degrees, this is warm for this time of the year. The way things are looking, spring is running about 10 days ahead of normal. The cool weather is going to help cool off the water. This will go along ways to extending the steelhead run in the Oak Orchard River.
It will take a few days for the water flow on the smaller area streams to come down. On the tail end of this push of high water, the smaller streams may experience a new surge of fish.
