Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
It is winter and things are kind of quiet in Fish City. Plenty of action on the ice and the weekends see some people but overall the fish are getting a break.
On the Salmon River the snow today and cold weather has most of the river full of slush. You will have to concentrate your efforts in the upper end of the river. Blue eggs, beads and small flies are doing the job there. Fishing overall has been decent but you have to work for them.
The Oswego is fishing well with a god mix of browns and steelhead. Eggs & jigs tipped with a minnow or wax worm are working for most.
All this cold weather has brought big smiles to the hard water anglers.
Chaumont Bay, Sandy Pond and Black Lake are the hot spots as they are producing good catches of perch and some nice pike.
Sandy Pond has about 6 inches ice and the perch fishing is excellent, with most anglers drilling at 10' to 12' depths.
Use live fat head minnows and Caty jigs and expect lots of seven to ten inch fish with a few jumbos.
Pike fishing is good using tip-ups and large minnows, and they can be a nuisance to perch fishers.
Chaumont Bay has over 6 inches of good ice and the perch fishing is good, with most anglers drilling at 12-foot to 14-foot depths straight out from the public boat launch.
I am getting a lot of mixed reports from Oneida Lake. Some guys are killing walleye and perch while others can't find them. It is a big lake so do your homework and be careful.
Reports from Sodus bay are the same. God ice in certain spots, but you need to use caution.
Perch have been the main target and small Caty jigs in a variety of colors are taking most of the fish there as well..
My January schedule is full and I am traveling to a few shows and taking a vacation this winter, but I have plenty of days in late February and March.
As for warmer dates I have April 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 20, 21, 25, 26 & May 7, 8, 9, 10 as well as plenty of days for the 2010 lake season.
