Bald Head Island - Saltwater Fishing Report
This is a late fishing report that took place in late August in a creek just to the north of Bald Head Island.
I picked the young men up at Bald Head Island Marina at the fuel dock at 08:00 am. I headed over the shallow water flats to the first creek to the North. The weather was ideal with no wind I noticed the finger mullet were running along the banks one school after another. I anchored the Pathfinder Bay boat just within casting distance of the bank. The anglers baited up with a finger mullet on Carolina Rigs using 2/0 Kahle hooks. The first angler baited up made a cast, within just a minute he yelled I am hooked up!
I saw the fish come up just behind the boat it was a good size Flounder, play him easy and don't try to lift him out of the water. I netted the fish when one of the other anglers yell got one on too. One of the other men grab the net and landed the second Flounder.
We stayed at that spot for about an hour until everyone on board had landed a Flounder.
I pulled anchor and moved to another spot along the creek bank where we got into a school of undersized Red Drum all throwbacks, these fish were hitting hard not to be the legal 18" size.
The young men were having a blast on the small Red Drum they did not even care that we were throwing them back! That is what fishing is really about, I like the charters where is more about the thrill of catching, than just trying to fill a cooler.
As the morning progressed we moved out of that creek, to a spot along the thorofare where we caught 2 keeper Red Drum.
Hope you enjoyed the fishing report, if you ever get an opportunity please visit Bald Head Island it is a really peaceful and unique place to vacation.
