Backwaters Cape Fear River

Cape Fear River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Backwaters of the Cape Fear River are producing some nice flounder and Red Drum in early September. I am finding most of the fish along the banks where there are current and shallow waters. Be stealthy when approaching your fishing spots in shallow waters red drums will easily spook. Keep an eye out for the grass bumping along the banks and watch for tail fins and dorsal fins. Be patient and give the fishing spot time to settle down, if there is bait there the red drum will respond.
My favorite rig is the Carolina Rig with a 1oz. egg sinker with a 1/0 circle hook. This allows the novice angler to hook fish with ease. My technique is to work the creeks, and the backwaters if they are not biting in the deeper waters in the creeks and banks, find a shallow water area with the current moving. My morning inshore charters have been exciting the anglers producing some hard fight red drum. Flounders have been showing up in the deeper waters along the banks.
