Carolina Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Inshore
The inshore fishing has improved dramatically since I posted my last report. The Red Drum, Black Drum, and Flounder have shown up in good numbers at Carolina Beach and Masonboro inlets. The baits of choice have been mullet and shrimp. Look for structure in the waterways and inlets and the fish shoud be holding in the area. The rigs of choice are a Carolina rig with bait, or a 3/4 ounce grub head tipped with cut bait. With the warmer water temps the cabbage grass has cleared out making fishing easier.
Coastal
The fishing just off the beach has improved with the warmer water temps. The Atlantic Bonita and False Albacore are still around in O.K. numbers. The best action has been on Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. Look for the birds and get just within casting distance of the breaking fish. This will allow the fish to stay on the surface, and give everyone a oppertunity to enjoy the action. The lures of choice are spoons and gotcha plugs in gold or silver.
Offshore
The offshore fishing has been both hot and cold over the past two weeks in the gulfstream. The action has consisted of Yellowfin and Blackfin tuna, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and King Mackerel. The lures of choice for tuna are sea witches in blue/white, purple/black, Wahoo blue/white and red/black, and the Mahi like chartruse/green, all rigged with a medium to small bally-hoo. Most of action has been in the early morning and mid to late afternoon. The best areas have been the same-ole and north until you find the bait or a rip. Have a great day and good fising.
