Southport - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past Monday I loaded the boat up for an afternoon of King Mackerel fishing. Live bait rods, plenty of ice, and beer. Called an old friend of mine to take a ride south on the Cape Fear River to fish off of Southport.
The Cape Fear River was laid out pretty this Fall afternoon making for a short 30 minute run from Carolina Beach on my 20' Pathfinder Bay boat. Found the pelicans diving right off oak Island lighthouse, threw the 12' cast net one time, and floated it with large menhadden. With a full baitwell. I headed toward Yaupon Reef within just a few minutes a spotted about 30 boats already fishing. I stopped just short of the reef and had Tim deploy the 4 lines rigged with large menhadden. I slow trolled for about an hour no strikes, I had Tim change the baits out just to check them, all but one of them were pulling fine. With fresh baits out it only took a minute and we had a reel start to scream, the Key Largo rod was bent over. The King Mackerel was headed offshore a sure sign of a big fish. Tim is an experienced angler I told him to catch the fish. After several runs we had the fish beside the boat, we both became excited when we spotted the King, it was Big! I gaffed the fish, almost struggled to get it over the gunnel. When the fish hit the deck, we both were all smiles we had landed our first fish of the afternoon. We got the lines back out quickly and manage to catch two more kings within the hour. This will be an afternoon of fishing that is going to hold many memories for me and Tim. Capt.Mike
