Oct. 21st Fall Fishing Report & Tips (ProFishNC Charters)

Capt. Trevor Smith
October 21, 2013
Topsail Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

North Carolina Fall Fishing is in FULL SWING and only getting better every day!

On many of our Inshore & Nearshore Wrightsville Beach and Topsail Beach Fishing Trips this week we have caught boat limits of Grey Trout, lots of LARGE Spanish Mackerel and lots of Flounder! Just this week I have gone through 30+ jigs from the teeth of very aggressive Spanish Mackerel (*Tip: The fish cant resist 3/4 oz Sea Striker Diamond Jigs in the Silver Color... #MatchTheHatch). This time of year I prefer to vertical jig and sight cast to the schools of Mackerel just a mile off of our beaches (IMO, its much more fun than just trolling for them).

The Bigger Flounder are moving into our backwater and estuaries; however, there are still good numbers of larger fish holding off of our Nearshore wrecks, ledges and hard-bottom areas. I am picking up most of our larger Nearshore Flounder on large Spro jigs pinned with a Berkley Gulp and on live finger mullet. In our inlets and backwaters I am picking up most of our fall flounder on Berkley Gulp shrimp with Blue Water Candy jigheads.

The Red Drum this past week was nothing short of Epic! We managed many "slot" Red Drum in the backwaters around docks and pilings; however, the story this week was the MONSTER Red Drum that are migrating south and passing through our waters. Just this past Wednesday we managed 6 Huge Breeder Red Drum with the largest coming in at 44" and 30+ Pounds and many more "Citation Sized" fish!

Our current water conditions are getting right and are now 70 - 72 degrees. With the approaching cooler weather and colder nights, expect the Fall Fishing "bite" to only get better as the abundant Speckled Trout move into our waters with the falling temps.

*Note: Our Cape Fear River and Wilmington, NC Fishing Charters are booking up quick for our late Fall and Winter Striped Bass Fishery. Give us a call today.
