Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hi Folks,
It has been a while. We have been dealing with the heat and the rain and now the heat again. Bottom line, inshore fishing is slow. But there is a silver lining behind every cloud.
Now here's my report:
INSHORE: Inshore fishing has hit the dog days a few weeks early for two reasons. First is the heat which is no news to anybody. It is surprising to see just how few people are actually on the water. Second we recently had almost 6 inches of much needed rain along the coast which has made the inshore waters dirty. There are some nice flounder on the last part of the incoming tide in the inlets. And, if you search long enough you can find some reds early or late in the day.
NEAR SHORE: The silver lining: the big flounder are in the ocean at the near shore reefs. They are being caught on live bait as well as jigging with bucktails tipped with Gulp. Of course when you are fishing in 40-50 feet of water, anything is possible to grab your bait. The Spanish mackerel so far are providing near record numbers, both trolling and sight casting.
OFFSHORE: In the 10 mile areas there have been some mahi, some kings and some large Spanish mackerel. Most of these fish have been caught on live bait. A few sailfish have been caught down near the shoals.
GULFSTREAM: No Reports.
UPCOMING: Of course if there is going to be a slow period during the summer, now is the time, especially inshore. I guess we are paying for the mild winter we enjoyed. With the heat, fish deeper water and live bait right now is typically going to work better than artificials. There are some nice fish to be caught; we just have to work a bit harder and smarter.
