Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hi Folks,
Can you believe this wind? Seems like it has been blowing forever. Sea water temp is right at 60 although it is warmer inside, closer to 65+. The 5 day forecast looks like the north winds will go south around Thursday with temps warming back into the 70's. We had a trip Friday just before this front came through and caught a nice mess of black and red drum. The fish are definitely here, we just need a weather break.
Now here's my report:
INSHORE: Black drum and red drum are plentiful right now. We are catching them on the falling and rising tide. Best bait is fresh shrimp. I use a Carolina rig with a #2 Eagle Claw 042 hook. A few flounder are around but look for that activity to pick up as the water warms.
NEAR SHORE: Bluefish are biting jigging spoons at the inlets on the high tide. We need the water temps to get above 60 to see better fish migration toward shore.
OFFSHORE: Some good bottom fishing going on when the wind allows the boats to go fishing.
GULFSTREAM: Wahoo and blackfin are biting strong and some mahi are being caught as well.
CAPE FEAR RIVER: Lots of fish in the river. Trout, reds and whiting are the main targets. You can catch the reds and trout on artificials and the whiting on fresh shrimp. Always try to use fresh shrimp.
UPCOMING: We will probably have a jump from a cool spring to a hot summer before long. When it does look for a week long shock to the fish as all of a sudden the water warms. Then fishing will really take off.
Be sure to check out my latest photos at http://www.rod-man.com/fishingphotos/main.php. We have made several guided trips recently and several more are on the calendar. We are looking forward to a lot of fish this year.
Until next time... LET'S GO FISHIN!!!
