SeaVee Boats - Catch More Fish

Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in February

Today it is 70 degrees; yesterday it was 60; the day before it was 40: and that is February in Southeast North Carolina. When the weather is cool, and that is being kind this winter, and you get a few warm days in a row, it's time to go fishing. The water will warm a few degrees quickly and the fish will come out of their lethargic state AND they will be hungry.

Best bets inshore right now are red drum (redfish) in the inlets and along the beach, right in the surf. They can be caught on mirro-lures and lead heads with curly tail grubs. Other fish in the area are black drum, sheepshead and tautog. You can catch all of these on fresh shrimp around rocks and dock pilings. Use a carolina rig with a #2 wide bend hook and just enough lead to touch the bottom.

Offshore right now, king mackerel are biting well in the 40 mile areas. Further out in the gulfstream, wahoo and blackfin tuna are providing action when the weather allows a 60 mile trip.

February is a great month to make sure all your gear is in good working order; the reels work smoothly, fresh line has been spooled, and rods are clean and in good repair. But don't forget, when the weather warms, get out and catch some of those hungry fish.

Good Fishing!
