Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

February Fishing
Hi Folks,
It's been a while since I sent out a report. Thought maybe I would bring everyone up to speed on what's happening.
Inshore: As you know it has been a long, cold winter. Fortunately that cold has had an unusual effect on the local red drum and speckled trout population. The inshore waters got so cold that these fish moved out into the ocean and on NICE days have been biting along the beaches from Topsail to Carolina Beach. The bad part is there haven't been that many nice days. Nevertheless, if we get a couple of nice days, and better weather just cannot be far away, try fishing for these nice fish with mirrolures and grubs. You can work for them from the beach or cover more ground in a boat. Also, there are still some black drum around the jetties. Best bait is fresh shrimp.
Offshore: Bottom fishing from 20 to 30 miles out has been good when weather has allowed. Good catches of sea bass, grouper, and spiny dog fish have been consistent. Find a ledge and drop a bait.
Gulfstream: Honestly, there have been few trips to the stream recently. Hi winds and cold temps have kept boats at port. Those who have made it have found some wahoo and blackfin tuna. There have been reports of Bluefin tuna at Frying Pan Tower.
April and May are just around the corner. Be sure to check out my web page, www.rodmancharters.com for April and May specials for bonito and spanish mackerel. April is nearly booked up, but a lot of dates are still open for May.
I will be at the Greensboro Bass and Saltwater Expo February 28 through March 2. Hope to see some of you there.
Stay Warm and Good Fishing
