Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

April 2, 2003
Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Action is Heating Up

Greetings from the Rod-Man

The season is getting off to a fast start and if the winds would abate we could do more fishing. The water temps are fine, from 62 to the mid 60's, but the wind is blowing steady at 20 knotts. (I thought March was suppose to go out like a lamb?)

Here's the latest:

Inshore: A few flounder are showing up in the creeks on the falling tide...when the water is warmer. We have caught them on artificials and small live bait. Puppy drum and black drum are hanging around the inlets and are in the waterway. Not in great numbers yet, but if you can fight through the slim-weed, they are there. A few specks are around too.

Nearshore: Lots of bluefish on the high tide. False albacore have been hiting from the inlet out 5 miles. Look for the birds working and throw small spoons at them and retrieve fast. I like the crippled herring spoon. The bonito should be here any minute!

Offshore: Lots and lots of king mackerel at the 35 mile area. Frying Pan Tower is a current hot spot.

Gulfstream: Large catches of yellowfin are common. There are plenty of wahoo too and an occassional bluefin.

Let's Go Fishing!

Capt. Rick
