Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bonito...and more!
Hi Folks,
Fishing this past week has been just plain good, if not great. The week started out with bluefish and a few bonito just off the beach and plenty of small red drum and bigger black drum inshore. The week ended with plenty of bonito and nice size bluefish just off the beach and good catches of mostly black drum inshore. Best baits for the blues and bonito are crippled herring, mega bite and chesapeake lure jig spoons. Best bait for the drum has been shrimp...fresh.
Here's my report:
Inshore: Red drum and black drum have cooperated nicely around the docks in the waterway and creeks. A few fish have started showing up in the inlets too.
Nearshore: Plenty of bonito at the 3 mile and 5 mile areas with lots of bluefish mixed in with them. The first spanish mackerel of the year was caught yesterday, so they should be showing up soon.
Offshore: King mackerel are still pretty far out, 25-35 miles, but look for them to start moving in soon with the warmer waters and bait that is finally showing up.
Gulfstream: Plenty of tuna and wahoo around. Some big mahi mahi and a few billfish are being caught as well.
Get your gear ready (it already should be) and get out on the water. It's time to go fishing!
