Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

First Mahi of the Year
Hi Folks,
Fishing the past week has been great on some days and fair on others. One day was particularly slow, with only 2 redfish caught inshore. I believe it had to do with the approaching full moon and strong west winds creating a very low, low tide. Then other days we caught tons of spanish and bonito and yesterday we caught the first mahi of the year, a beautiful 18 pounder.
Here's my report for the week May 8 through May 14:
Inshore: Good water temperatures are producing fair to good catches of redfish and a few flounder. Live bait is showing up and that should really kick start the inshore fishing. Large bluefish and some monster drum are showing up right in the inlets. The blues have been in the 10-15 pound range and some of the drum have been over 40 pounds.
Nearshore: Spanish mackerel and bonito continue to be the hot action. Plenty of small kings in the 4-6 mile areas can be found.
Offshore: King mackerel at the 10 mile areas are biting good. And as mentioned the first inshore mahi of the year was caught on the Rod-Man yesterday at 24 miles. Plenty of bonito in the 25 mile areas too.
Gulfstream: Plenty of wahoo are being caught when the seas are calm enough to get out. Lots of yellowfin and blackfin tuna and some mahi are being caught as well.
This is a great time of year to fish; the variety available is like no other time of the year and with the weather and timing coming together like it is, June should be a fabulous fishing month.
Let's Go Fishing!
