Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Everything is Biting!!!
HI Folks,
Fishing is Great. Reds and Flounder inshore; Spanish nearshore; Kings and Mahi from 4 to 25 miles out. It is all happening right now.
Here's my report: Week Ending June 11, 2003
Inshore: Large flounder and red drum to 33 inches have been the story inshore this week. Doormat flounder are being caught on live menhaden at the inlets, the cut and the river. Best rig is a carolina rig with a # 2 wide bend hook. Large reds and some puppies too are being caught around the heavy structure along the waterway and the creeks. Again, best bait is menhaden, although fresh mullet or bluefish will do the trick. A heavier carolina rig...80 pound test with a 2/0 wide bend hook...will do the trick. We also caught a huge 8 pound+ bluefish and saw a tarpon roll this week.
Nearshore: Spanish action is picking up daily with several boats reporting good catches. Today we had 12 spanish, 2 small albacore, and 2 bluefish in just a couple hours of trolling with spinning gear.
Offshore: One mahi was caught 4 miles out and more have been hooking up in the 18 to 25 mile areas. Kings are biting as well. Best baits are live menhaden, dead cigar minnows and ballyhoo for slow trolling and #1 clarkspoons for fast trolling.
Gulfstream: Some big marlin have been landed at the Big Rock this week. Other catches include wahoo and mahi with random catches of yellowfin and blackfin tuna.
