Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

FLOUNDER
Hi Folks,
The Rod-Man had a rare day off so this weeks' report is a little early. The big action is still the flounder and the redfish inshore. Good catches of doormat flounder have been common and one fish caught this week was over 10 pounds. Red drum continue to provide strong fights with fish ranging from 18 to 33 inches.
Here's my report: For the Week Ending June 17, 2003:
Inshore: Big flounder and red drum IS the talk among the inshore crowd. Menhaden is the bait of choice. Fish are being caught in the inlets, the creeks, the waterway, the cut and the river...take your pick. Best rig is a carolina rig with enough wait to saty in touch with the bottom.
Nearshore: The spanish mackerel and bluefish are here, but they are a little unpredictable. Somedays they are along the beach and others they are around the nearshore reefs. 00 clarkspoons fished at various depths work best.
Offshore: King mackerel and mahi, along with amberjack and barracuda, continue to provide action at the offshore rocks and artificial reefs. Best bait is live menhaden, but cigar minnows and ballyhoo work well too. Try a squid rigged on a Barefoot Squid Sub....great for mahi..and kings. I found the rig at Bug-Em Bait.
Gulfstream: The main attraction is still wahoo and mahi. But scattered reports of tuna, both yellowfin and blackfin continue to be heard. Billfish action is good too.
