Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week Ending July 23, 2003
Hi Folks,
The past week has been challenging. The weather has been tricky at times and the fish have been too. We had a couple of real slow days but then fishing picked back up. We have had some high winds the past two days and plenty of rain today and more forecast for tomorrow. But then things hopefully will clear up and the fish will chomping.
Here's my report: Week Ending July23, 2002:
Inshore: The primary fishes inshore right now are flounder and red drum. The best baits are menhaden and finger mullet, fished on a carolina rig.
Nearshore: Spanish mackerel fishing is picking up with good catches reported in the past two days. Fish can be found from the beach out to ten miles. Clarkspoons fished at various depths on 30+ foot leaders are best.
Offshore: King mackerel, mahi and sailfish action is very good right now in the 10-25 areas. Live bait is very good (menhaden), and ballyhoo is working well too. Fast trolling with spoons and ballyhoo is working well as is slow trolling with live bait.
Gulfstream: Good catches of yellowfin tuna are being reported. Wahoo and mahi add to the action.
