Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Week Ending October 14, 2003
Hi Folks,
After a long period of rain and some wind that kept us off the water, we have been fishing again with good to great results. The cool fronts coming through this week should bring the fall fishing into full swing.
Now here's my report: For the week Ending October 14, 2003:
Inshore: The usual flounder and red drum are around the inlets and waterways and creeks. Live finger mullet, menhaden or mud minnows are the best baits, fished on carolina rigs. Specks have shown up and if you are in the right place at the right time, they are in good numbers too. Live bait or artificials are working. Best areas are oyster bars in the creeks on the falling tide.
Nearshore: Nice fat bluefish and some of this years biggest spanish mackerel are at the inlet mouths and the inshore reefs. Crippled Herring, Stingsilver, Chesapeake spoons/jigs in the 3/4 to 1.5 oz. sizes jigged right on the bottom or site casting to breaking fish are the most productive and sporting methods. (Today we got into the big spanish and caught 10 in a short 30 minutes...all of which were over 2 pounds)
Offshore: King mackerel are producing plenty of action at the reefs from 17 to 25 miles out. Live bait works best, but is getting harder find. Ballyhoo and cigar minnows work well, as do drone spoons and large clarkspoons.
Gulfstream: There is good action on yellowfin and some blackfin tuna too. Wahoo and a few mahi are in the mix as well.
Bluefish lovers this is your time of the year. Get out on the water.
Let's Go Fishing!!!
