Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Period Ending December 17, 2003
Period Ending December 17, 2003;
Hi Folks,
Before I give my fishing report, I just wanted to tell everyone I hope they have a great holiday season. The Rod-Man has had a wonderful year and we are still catching fish...when the weather cooperates...and I wanted to thank you for helping me have a great season. Hopefully I will have a chance to fish with many of you next year. This will probably be my last report until late March. I will still be fishing off and on and if you need an update on what is going on, just drop me an email. Now here's my report:
Inshore: Good catches of speckled trout can be had when the weather permits. Live shrimp is working best, but mirrolures and grubs will get the job done. Try the Berkley Power Bait line of 4" curly tails. They are scented and work great. Black drum and tautog are being caught near the low tide and the beginning of the rising tide...on shrimp fished on a carolina rig. Good catches of stripers are happening in the Cape Fear River.
Nearshore: False albacore are still milling around and on a calm day (anyone seen one lately?) you'll see the bird action and the fish jumping. Crippled Herring, Mega-Bait, and Maria spoons will do the job. Gray trout are still biting at the reefs and hard bottom areas along the beach. Sea bass are biting squid at the artificial reefs from three miles on out.
Offshore: The only action we have heard of is king mackerel at Frying Pan Tower.
Gulfstream: No reports.
Hope to see many of you at the boat shows and fishing schools in January and February. Please check the announcement page at www.rodmancharters.com for dates.
Until then Happy Holidays and Good Fishing to All.
