Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Good Fishing Just Over the Next Wave

March 28, 2004

Greetings everyone!

It has been a long winter, but finally things are showing signs that spring fishing is right about to explode. Sea water temps nearshore are in the 57-58 range and inshore is right at the 60 degree mark. Both are prime for the action to turn on any day.

I would like to thank all the new friends I made at the various seminars I did this winter and the old friends that came by to say hello too. I have been building many rods along with getting the boat and all the tackle ready for an exciting fishing season.

Gas prices are soaring, but I am trying to hold my rates this year to the same as last year. Hopefully the price of fuel will come down...which would help us all.

And now I am sure everyone would like to know what is going on at the end of the hook...so to speak.

Inshore: Things are just starting to happen. A few drum, red and black can be found in the waterway and near the rocks at Masonboro inlet. A few specs are at the inlet too, but it is a waiting game. Up the creeks where the warmest water is you can find a few small flounder.

Nearshore: The best bite right now is black sea bass and tautog. These fish have been running good size and can be caught on squid and jigging spoons. Look for the bluefish and the bonito to show up soon.

Offshore: Again, bottom fish are readily available. King mackerel are in the 35-45 mile range.

Gulfstream: As usual this is where the hot action is this time of year. Good catches of tuna and wahoo have been reported. A few mahi have also been in the mix.

This is the time of year when fishing can go from fair to fantastic, literally overnight. I will try to keep you posted, but if you have a question please feel free to let me know.

The boat, the rods and the tackle are ready...bring on the fish!!!
