Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Week Ending April 11, 2004
Hi folks,
It's time for another up date on what is and what is not going one this early spring. Spring fishing has been slow to get into full swing, but that could change at any hour. I guess that is what makes it so interesting. Ocean water temps have not warmed up to what they should be...seem to be 2-3 degrees behind usual and the fishing is showing it. But again, it could change overnight.
For the week ending April 11, 2004:
Inshore: Patience is the key to catching some nice red drum. They are still a bit sluggish, but will bite. They are in pretty large schools so try to be quiet a you approach a "drum" area and remain a while. Carolina rigs with fresh shrimp or cut bait work well. Also a Hank Brown hookup tipped with shrimp can bring results. And don't be surprised if you catch a black drum in the same area.
Nearshore to 10 miles:
The bonito showed themselves for a couple of days then have disappeared. They should be back at any minute and the next time in big numbers. In the meantime, we have been catching some nice blues, seabass and tautog, and some grunts.
Offshore:
Albacore at 17-18 miles, while kings are 35 miles plus. This time of year Frying Pan Tower can be very productive. For the albacore, jigs like the Maria spoon are good and for the kings the usual cigar minnows and ballyhoo will do the trick.
Gulfstream:
Good catches of wahoo, tuna and dolphin are being reported. This is one of the best seasons for the stream.

I will do my best to keep you posted, but feel free to email me with any questions. I will certainly tell you "like it is", which is much more accurate than the newspaper...most of the time.
Good Fishing,
Captain Rick Bennett
