Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Period Ending June 3, 2004
Hello Folks,
Sorry it's been a while since my last report, but I have been too busy fishing...at least that is my excuse. The good news is the big flounder have moved in and are being caught with regularity. Red drum action is heating up. Spanish are biting on the beach and kings and mahi are biting further offshore.
Here's my report for the period ending June 3, 2004:
Inshore: Plenty of small menhaden are available now in most of the usual places...creeks, waterway, marinas. Very nice flounder are being caught in the inlets, creeks and waterway. Fish a carolina rig with a live menhaden slowly moving across the bottom. Reds and blacks (drum) are being caught at the inlets and at pilings...live bait, chunk bait, and fresh shrimp are working well.
Nearshore: The large schools or poagies have shown up along the beach and with them the cobia. Spanish macks are plentiful along the beach and can best be caught using 00 clarkspoons fished with #1 planers and 30-35 feet of leader.
Offshore: King mackerel, cobia and mahi are biting. Kings and cobia can be caught from 3 miles out to 40 miles and the mahi are showing up in the 25 mile areas. Best baits are live menhaden, cigar minnows, and ballyhoo.
Gulfstream: Good reports are coming in for tuna, both yellowfin and blackfin, mahi and wahoo. A few billfish are being caught as well.
Some of the best fishing of the year is going on now and will be through the next two months. So if you can find the time (make the time), be sure to get out on the water and catch some FISH.
