Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Week Ending June 10, 2004
Hi Folks,
This weeks' fishing has had a little bit of everything. We have caught flounder and drum; spanish and king mackerel and even some very nice cobia. Live bait is hard to find for this time of year, but generally speaking the fish are cooperative. Now here's my report:
For the week ending June 10, 2001:
Inshore: Some very nice flounder are being caught in the inlets and river. The key is good live bait and patience. Small bluefish are a nuisance while flounder fishing, but with patience you can work through the bluefish to find a nice flat fish for the table. Red drum are working the creeks and inlets and some of the docks along the waterway. Best bait for the flounder and drum are live menhaden, fished on a carolina rig.
Nearshore: Very good catches of spanish mackerel are typical right now. The fish are mostly hitting deep on #1 planers and 00 clarkspoons fished on 30-35 foot leaders. Some cobia are lurking around the nearshore artificial reefs. Chum bags and live bait will draw their attention.
Offshore: King mackerel and mahi are biting from 10 to 30 miles out with some nice cobia mixed in with them. Live bait is best, but cigar minnows and ballyhoo will work also.
Gulfstream: The stream continues to provide good catches of wahoo, tuna and mahi. It is a long ride, but most boats are making the trip worth the effort.
Big flounder fishing should continue to improve as should offshore fishing for mahi and king mackerel. If you get a chance get on the water and catch a fish!
