Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Period Ending July 25, 2004
Hello everyone,
Time for an update on this summer's fishing. This week has seen some good action despite the low pressure that has been hanging on top of us. The low has caused some slow days as well. The pressure is creeping up now and the fish should respond. We have had just about everything this week: from sailfish taking baits to large reds making powerful runs.
Here's my report: Period Ending July 25, 2004:
Inshore: Red drum is where the action is...live bait (mullet or menhaden) fished on carolina rigs have been producing nice fish around the inlets, the ICW and the larger creeks. Best fishing has been on a falling tide. Flounder fishing...see nearshore!
Nearshore: The flounder are mostly on the artificial reefs just off the beach. Use a wreck anchor and some live bait. Large fish as well as smaller fish are being caught. Put a float rig out for some nice spanish action. Spanish mackerel have shown very well this week. Good catches of nice size fish have been reported up and down our beaches. Clarkspoons on 30+ foot leaders work best.
Offshore: From 5 miles to 30 miles king mackerel and mahi are biting, as well as an occasional sailfish. Best action has been at the 23 and WR4. Best baits are ballyhoo, cigar minnows, and live menhaden.
Gulfstream: Action is a little slow this time of the year. Mahi and billfish are providing most of the action, with an occasional wahoo or tuna.
Summer is flying by and that means fall and the great fishing it brings is not far away. After the heat of this summer I for one am looking forward to cooler days on the water.
