Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Period Ending August 8, 2004

Hi Folks,

Post Alex report: Fortunately our area did not receive much of anything from Alex. The ocean got churned up a bit but the day after was flat and we were fishing and catching. The big event came a day later when the strong cold front came through and that HAS affected fishing. Fish respond to barometric changes much like humans...they don't like until things equalize. For the most part that is over and things should be getting back in high gear this week. Now here's my report:

For the period ending August 8, 2004:

Inshore: Flounder and reds have been doing well. Flounder in good numbers are still on the AR's just off the beach and reds are hanging around the inlets, the ICW docks and the creeks. Best bait for flounder is still menhaden...which are hard to find. If you cannot find the poagies use live finger mullet for the flounder and the reds.

Nearshore: The spanish bite continues with some good size fish showing up. The good clarkspoon is still the bait of choice. A pleasant surprise has been the strong showing of cobia around the inshore AR's. Fishing Saturday we hooked one and saw EIGHT!

Offshore: Fishing has been a bit slow since Alex, but is showing signs of coming back. Yesterday we only caught one mahi and one king. There were more kings out there, but we were focused on catching mahi. Mahi should be around in the 20-30 mile areas for a while longer before returning to the stream.

Gulfstream: I have action on wahoo, mahi and tuna this week. This is good for August and we should have a great fall in the stream.

If you like flounder don't miss this week's pic of the week: www.rodmancharters.com

Enjoy this cool weather and catch some fish.

Let's Go Fishing!!!
