Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 15, 2005
Fishing Report April 15, 2005:
Hi Folks,
Well the taxes are done and I cannot fish due to the wind, so I thought I would bring you up to date on the fishing seen. The bad news is the spring weather has been just short of plain awful. Rain and wind, wind and rain have dominated the season thus far. The good news is the fish are hear.
Inshore: Flounder, red and black drum, and trout are being caught. Best places to fish are from behind Figure 8 island, down the waterway and into the Cape Fear River. Whiting (Virginia mullet) are also biting in the river on FRESH shrimp. Many fish are hitting shrimp and many are hitting artificials. The new Saltwater Gulp is doing very well.
Nearshore: The bonito are here. They showed up this past Monday. Unfortunately the high winds have prevented a lot of ocean fishing. When things settle down, look for bonito and bluefish to be on the seen.
Offshore: Kings are still a long way out...25+ miles. As the water warms, they will quickly move in closer.
Gulfstream: When boats can get out, reports of very good tuna and wahoo catches have been reported. Some mahi are adding to the mix.
I know everyone is frustrated and so am I, but weather is just something you have to deal with when it comes to fishing. If the wind is blowing, find a nice leeward spot and wet a line...the fish are hungry.
Let's Go Fishing!!!
