Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report August 18, 2005

Report: August 18, 2005

Hi Everyone,

The hot topic and the hot fish this week continues to be spanish mackerel. Catches in the high 20's and up to 50 are not uncommon. Red drum activity is picking up and flounder are doing the same. The mullet run has begun with large schools of mullet running the waterway at low tide....easy pickings for live bait enthusiasts. Big king mackerel are biting at 10 miles and some fantastic catches of mahi have been reported.

Now here's my report:

Inshore: Hot water temps make best fishing early and late, or even at night. Red drum and flounder are biting in the inlets, waterway and creeks. Plenty of live bait is around to help you catch your favorite.

Nearshore: It's not the "spanish are coming"; it's the spanish are here. Plenty of spanish mackerel are patrolling the beach. I have caught most of my fish on spin tackle using bird rigs. This is a great way to enjoy catching a great fish that is just not big enough for heavy tackle. At the nearshore AR's barracuda are providing hot action on tube lures.

Offshore: King mackerel are biting from 5 to 30 miles out. Mahi are biting from 10 to 25 miles out. Live bait is working best for big kings and ballyhoo is working best for mahi.

Gulfstream: The best action is from wahoo and mahi. Billfish add a pleasant surprise.

Interest in the recently announced Second Annual Rod-Man Fishing School has been outstanding. Please remember seating is limited and if you are interested let me know and we'll get you registered.

Sponsor's Corner:

Fall is just around the corner and while fishing is really good right now, look for cooler temps in September and October to bring fishing to this years' peak. Fish Okuma reels; I have found the VS 40 is the smoothest reel I have ever used and will soon have some of the VS 30's and VS 45's so I'll have all the sizes I need for smooth inshore/near shore fishing. Berkley's Gulp products are taking the fishing world by storm. Their claim is the are better than live bait. I am not sure about that, but I do know the baits catch fish. Check out Bug-Em Bait for Okuma reels and all your fishing needs: 910-452-9955.

Let's Go Fishing!!!
