Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rod-Man Report
Rod-Man Report April 19, 2006
Hi Folks,
I know it has been a long time since I sent out a report. Quite frankly we have been catching some fish, but nothing to write home about. That is changing and changing fast. The bonito showed up in numbers at the 10 mile today and could be on the beach tomorrow or the next day.
Here's my report:
Inshore: Fishing is slow to good. Some specks are around on the falling tide. Best bait has been Gulp, that incredible "artificial" bait by Berkley. On the windy days we couldn't get out we have done well with the trout using the Gulp natural 3" shrimp. Some reds have been caught around the inlets and the creeks. Live bait is in the river now and look for action to heat up soon.
Near Shore: This is where the action is and when the wind hasn't blown, we have done pretty well. Lots of bluefish and gray trout can be caught deep jigging with Crippled Herring spoons. Today we even caught a sheepshead on a spoon! I have "heard" reports of some spanish south of us a bit but have not investigated yet to see if they are there...but I will soon.
Offshore: Bonito showed at the 10 mile range today. Some very good size sea bass are being caught there as well.
Gulfstream: Again the weather is the key here. Lots of nice kings being caught as well as some tuna, wahoo, and even a few mahi have been reported.

Many, many things are happening. Plans are underway for next year's Rod-Man Fishing School and expanding it to two cities...stay tuned for details soon. People continue to ask me about my Okuma V series reels. They are in their second year now and smooth as silk. Gulp! Get it! Use it!
It's heating up!
Let's Go Fishing!!!
