Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rod-Man Report May 23, 2006
Rod-Man Report May 23, 2006:
Hi Folks,
Fishing is hot!!! Finally! Just about everything is biting. Flounder and drum inshore, and spanish and kings near shore and wahoo, tuna and dolphin in the stream.
Inshore: We are catching both red and black drum. Best bait menhaden, dead or alive. If you cannot find bait we have caught fish on GULP. I like most any of them, but the New Penny 3" shrimp may be my favorite. Flounder are hitting live menhaden fished on carolina rigs. Fish are in the inlets, the waterway and the creeks. We even caught a flounder on a fly!
Near shore: Big spanish are patrolling the close in areas in 15 to 40 feet of water. Best methods are the tried and true #1 planer with an 0 or 00 clarkspoon, or if you want to lighten up try a Yozuri deep diver on a spin rod. Troll these slow at about 3 knots. Cobia are starting to show up. Large schools of menhaden are along the beach.
Offshore: King mackerel are biting from about 10 miles on out to 25 miles. Cigar minnows, deep divers, live menhaden and spoons....all will catch these nice spring fish.
Gulfstream: Wahoo, tuna, mahi and billfish are biting. Wow!!!
Obviously fishing is really turned on. The holiday weekend is coming and hope everyone has a chance to get on the water. By all means, BE SAFE. No fish is worth a life or serious injury.
