Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Even though this time of year many anglers chase the wahoo here in our waters, the opportunities for a big black marlin and hot action with jumbo yellowfin tuna is a daily occurrence.
The waters around Isla Ladrones will be holding more and more blacks, while the spot halfway between Ladrones and Isla Montuosa is THE place to find those tunas.
Big poppers and butterfly jigs are the answer for the tunas, while fresh, live bonitos, eye-rigged with a big circle hook and idle trolled around the humps and reefs is the best way to get onto that big marlin of your dreams.
It's hard to troll plastics while leading the bonitos around by the nose, as the little extra speed needed to make the artificials " pop" correctly also kills the bonitos. So, we rig the bonitos off the transom, one short, one long, and rig up belly baits, what we call " Panama Baits", with or without a small skirt, and run them off the riggers, far enough back as not to interfere with the livies. They tend to swim towards the smell of the belly baits, thinking the " school" has come to keep them company, or somehow rescue them.
Cubera snapper, dorado, and some nice grouper are also found off Ladrones.
Roosterfish seem to be a little slow, but actually, we haven't been putting enough serious time on them to make a judgement one way or another.
Fishing will continue to improve, but really it hasn't been bad at any time this year.
Save your moolah, and give me a shout at my e-mail> [email protected] to arrange a charter package for this summer, JAnuary to July.
We'll be ready for you and your friends !!!!
Good Luck Fishing, WHEREVER You Are !!!! Capn Bob
