Panama - Boca Chica

Capt. Bob Baker
February 15, 2006
Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

COSTA RICA-GOLFITO AREA-OFFSHORE

Now rated #2 in the WORLD, Golfito continues to make it's mark with great billfishing.

A severe cold front almost shut down the bite, but there were still some good release numbers for the harder-working captains. The bums still had nice weather for their "boat rides".

We went to downriggers for finicky sails, and dropping down a bit on our drop back leader sizes also helped. A little less drag, and no problemo.

Marlin are getting ready for the moon change, and the last part of this monthy should prove to be wild!

Plenty of sails and marlin all over the place, but finicky. That's changing every day out.

Still some big yellowfin outside, and dorado continue to crash the lures and sizzle the grill.

Good Fishing !! Capt. Bob

COSTA RICA-GOLFITO-INSHORE

Roosterfish continue to crash yo-zuri jigs , and sardines dropped on our reefs and volcanic chunks are taking cubera snapper, African pompano, yellowtail snapper, and grouper.

Bait has been hard to get in the mornings, but that should change as the new moon rises. Should be great the second half of the month for some big snook too!!

Two clients from England had sails offshore and returned about every afternoon for some rooster action off Mata Palo, Carate and some of our 'secret' spots.

Good Fishing!! Capn Bob

PANAMA- ISLA COIBA TO PUNTA BURICA

The VIKINGS landed, but so did a massive cold front. Our first day out with 5 clients from ICELAND proved to be the best , and virtually LAST day of good fishing during this 6 day tour. We had BLACK MARLIN , DORADO, and YELLOWFIN TUNA our first day out, all hooked up on slow-trolled, live bonito and yellowfin tuna.

Arni Baldursson's great friend and right hand man "FINNY" had a 50 lb. dorado eat a 10 lb. yellowfin trolled around world class fishing locale, Isla Ladrones. We also had 4 MARLIN bites, but luck was not with us, and the big girls took all the prizes, releasing THEMSELVES before we could help them.

Then the weather got rough, the wind high, and the rains came as the big freeze came down from the frozen North country. Fish went down, went dopey, and just plain went. 12 boats , from Pesca Panama, Coal Star, Panama Big Game Club, and our two boats all burned a lot of fuel for virtually nada.

The fish are there however, and the front is lifting and should be gone by this weekend, according to forecasts.

On our last day fishing Panama with John Hildreth and son Ed of JDH Safari's(Gr.Britain), Ed boated a fantastic trophy while slow-trolling a 7 lb. bonito off Ladrones for marlin. As the fish ate the bait, giving the circle hook time to do it's job, we were sure we had "Big Mami" on the line! But no, not a black marlin. Instead, after a hard fight on 80 lb. gear, we took a 45 pound CUBERA SNAPPER over the side!!

What a brute! As promised, I've boiled the head(in a soup) and have dried the massive jaws and canine teeth to make some ivory earrrings for Ed's girlfriend.

The chef at the Hotel Puerta del Sol in David made a special meal for 4 of us out of onbe side of the fish's fillets, and the other side went to mate Rito and my trusted helper, Ronaldo.

Get on board right away for your Panama trip. The change of the moon will open up the bite once again, and there are a lot of billfish , tuna, and others all around.

PANAMA-INSHORE-CHIRIQUI ESTUARY-OFFSHORE ROCKS

LOTS of action will be on hand for the rest of FEb. and the coming monts, for anglers who want a mix of inshore with their offshore fishing.

Good numbers of all species around Islas Parida, Ladrones, Montuosa, and Coiba. Catch /release at Coiba now. Don't forget.

The huge estuary draining the Chiriqui /David area will be hot for big corvina and catches of varied snappers and even some very big broomtail grouper.

We had a beauty of an offshore grouper, called 'cierna', on a deep drop off Isla Ladrones. Bring the IRON and some BIG twister tails!!!

Good Fishing! Capn Bob
