Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Costa Rica-Golfito Offshore
The rainy season has crept in, dropping high surface temps. and making the billfish more active on top.
We've been trolling split-tail mullet and rigged bonito bellies on Z-WINGS at 60 and 100 ft. , and actually getting most of our strikes down there all during the hot weather of Feb. and mid-March.
We'll continue to offer this mix in our spreads , even though the fish are coming up on top a bit more now.
April, May , and into July should be VERY good months to hammer the sails and marlin.
Again in AUGUST, the migration of BLACK MARLIN will offer as good a chance as anywhere in the world for a truly large marlin.
Some days you hit a school of dorado , or at least a very large lone bull, and some days you never see one.
Pete La Fleche, fishing on his "CORK" even had a WAHOO the other day, along with a nice sail for one of his visiting friendsfrom Canada.
This is another sign that water temps are dropping on the surface. Nice going Pete !! "HE SAYS" it was 5 ft. long, so we'll have to believe him. I guess.
Lots of sails outside, a perfect time for throwing feathers at them. Fly anglers will have plenty of shots in the next two months.
Good Fishing !! Capn Bob
Costa Rica- Golfito INSHORE
Now that most of the "snowbird' lodges have taken their loot back to the U.S.A and closed up shop, the BIG roosterfish in particular, and many other species like snapper, amberjack, African pompano, and others will return to their regular haunts and calm down a bit. Roosters are known to leave a favorite structure when the pressure gets too hot on them.
Last season, while experimenting on a new SNOOK location, we accidentally found the big roosters jammed up around this set of rocks that get very little , if any, attention.
That day, Mr. Frank Locker of N.Y. caught the fish of his dreams, a 54 lb. trophy, which he released unharmed. She came on a slow trolled, live sardine.
Corvina, our sea bass, will be getting hotter and hotter all the way up to their JUNE spawning action. Catches are improving every time out. Alonzo Paniagua, usually an albatross on any trip(this guy can't catch BAIT), caught the ONLY corvina on a recent trip, and it was a beauty . He still hasn't stopped bragging about his angling prowess, even though the fish was reduced to ceviche, fillets, and fish head soup a long time ago. 35 lbs. Great fish.
Snook will begin coming into the rivers more and more now, leaving the beaches and getting ready to spawn.
Many fish of 30 lbs. and larger are taken by our boats every year. We're always open. We live HERE !!
Good Fishing Capn Bob
