Panama - Boca Chica

Capt. Bob Baker

Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Costa Rica--GOLFITO area OFFSHORE

Cooler weather , some rain and cloud cover, have lowered the surface temps. outside, and the yellowfin are in thick.

WAHOO should be showing in greater numbers now that the sun's not in their eyes so much.

BILLFISH- Along with the TUNA come the MARLIN. JUNE, JULY, and **especially AUGUST will be hot for big BLACK MARLIN with the occasional BLUE MARLIN coming to the baits.

Strategy for this time of year, when possible, is to try and find the porpoise /tuna schools, then troll feathers and bridle a couple of live tunas in the 5-10 lb. class , slow trolling them around the area.

In the early morning, we "Run & Gun" , fast troll, to cover a lot of water in search of the tuna schools, then use the above tactics.

Still some SAILFISH out there, and when we're on them, they are hot to bite. Fly anglers are getting their shots, along with our drop back anglers and plastic draggers. They all work.

Still dorado out there. With more jungle junk coming out of the rivers, it's easy to find a nice 'trash line' to troll beside, picking up some very nice mahi.

GOLFITO area--INSHORE

Lots of ROOSTERFISH on our structure, along with AMBERJACK, CUBERA SNAPPER, YELLOWTAIL SNAPPER, AND GROUPER.

Soon the African POMPANO will be over the reefs in good numbers.

JUNE, JULY is CORVIA time!!! These 'sea bass, up to 40 lbs., are spawning at this time, and some great action is possible.

Along with the CORVINA, we'll be taking some big ROCK SNAPPER. Some really tough fights with those beasts.

SNOOK will be coming into the rivers, and live sardines will take the bigger ones, to 40 lbs. and larger. This may be the year for the world record to be broken here.

PANAMA OFFSHORE---INSHORE

BLACK MARLIN will be the primary target for billfishermen, and they'll be in good numbers from now on.

WAHOO season will be getting into full swing soon. There are a few nice ones around, but the main body of fish come to us around late JULY and on to January.

BIG YELLOWFIN TUNA will be present from now to January. Isla Ladrones, Montuosa, and the HANNIBAL BANK will give up a lot of fish over 200 lbs.

CUBERA SNAPPER up and over 50 lbs. will be feasting on all the bait around Isla Ladrones and Punta Burica.

CORVINA seem to grow larger here than in Costa Rica, and 50 pounders are not uncommom. Lots of fish in the huge mangrove estuary for you guys who want to anchor up and bottom bounce.
