Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Costa Rica-- Golfito/Playa Zancudo to Punta Burica
As happened about 4 or 5 years ago, the weather has taken a severe turn-around(for the GOOD!) and we believe the same that happened then will take place again. That is, lots of heavy rains on the Atlantic side in December and a clearing and move towards summer here in the Pacific.
Two cold fronts that are freezing the residents of the Central Valley (San Jose) are blessing us with cool nights and clear, sunny days.
Reports just in tell us the a huge school of DORADO are fattening up on bait just off Cabo Mata Palo and Punta Banco(Pavones). They're even coming inside the Gulf.
We just finished mounting and checking out two of our new Evinrude e-tecs, and we'll hit the dorado maybe tomorrow for a "Research" run. We'll be running twin 115 hp 'rolexes' this year. Man, they sound GOOD !!!
YELLOW FIN TUNA continue to slam feathers and daisy chained Moldcraft squids close to shore. A few seasons back, noted custom rod builder Hank Altenkirch fished here with his wife and gave me some feather 'chains' that he makes up in his Long Island home, but the plumes have been chewed off by all the tuna , bonito, and dorado that they've caught. Got to give Hank a ring soon and stock up.
The MARLIN, who never left us this year, have decided to stay and feast on all the small tunas. Now, with the added bonus of all the dorado, we'll keep the light tackle where it belongs during these times, inshore.
Make sure you book early for the prime season, January to May.Send your mail to me at [email protected] and check out my website, www.costaricafishing.com for more info.

Good Fishing, Wherever you are Capn Bob
Costa Rica Inshore
We've been having steady good fishing all winter.
Corvina have been hot, snappers of all types biting well, roosterfish are in good numbers. The corvina actually are at their best in JUNE, when they spawn and are very aggressive. That's also a great time for SNOOK.
I hope when you come down to fish , even if it's at another lodge, you won't permit your crew to kill ANY roosterfish for the table.
We've refused to do so since I've been here, 11 years, and verbally abuse anyone who kills one on purpose. Some of the other lodges don't follow this catch and release policy however, so watch your crews, and USE CIRCLE HOOKS. They make a BIG difference in mortality rates , as these bruisers take a slow-trolled , live sardine with the intent of swallowing it, not toying with it. Just steady pressure on a light drag as they make their typical run will hook them in the corner of the mouth about every time.
With the cold fronts hitting us now, we should see increased SNOOK action out front of the lodge and in the river mouth. We had a very rainy October, and the debris in the water made it almost impossible to fish them.
Make sure you plan your winter get-away trip with enough fishing days to try for all the various species , both inshore and offshore.
We hope to see you here when "Summer" really hits after the Christmas Holidays.
