Panama - Boca Chica

Capt. Bob Baker
August 8, 2007
Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama- Costa Rica Offshore

We have been scoring heavily on marlin, both blue and black, (mostly blue), just inside the Costa Rica marine frontier, what we call the "high spot", about 10 miles from Punta Burica.

There is a ton of bait out there, lots of juvenile bonito and skipjack tuna, and it looks like the big fish aren't going anywhere soon.

Most boats fishing that area out of Zancudo Beach are having the same results.

There are also very good numbers of sailfish out there. Switching a lure for a live sardine or blue runner is the best. If we have trouble getting live bait in the early morning, we just head out and then troll a feather in the shotgun position , which get's us our bonito.

The bellies work best for the sails, but we keep one whole , bridled with a circle hook, waiting for Big Mama to show up.

Not much to say about dorado or yellowfin tuna right now, but , like everything, that's subject to change.

Had a few wahoo just outside Burica. Finally boated one, a 46 pounder, after getting two rapala's cut off. They hit the snap swivel attaching the wire leader to the main line.

Want to mention to my faithful reader's that I'm going into a joint venture with Capt. Bob Erwin of Australia and Florida, to offer his 43' custom catamaran for charter this season. The boat is finished superbly, fishes great, goes great, and has plenty of room for a larger group of anglers. She has a 13' beam, all the bells n' whistles, and she's ready to go right now !!!

On the Panama side, the fish are there and biting, according to reports from friends, with the same array of "usual suspects " hitting . Blue and black marlin, a few dorado.

Main difference is the amount of WAHOO available on that side. More structure than here in our C.R. fishing grounds.

Isla Ladrones continues to produce these fish. Add huge CUBERA SNAPPER to the mix, and that slow-trolling that seems to bore some impatient anglers can really pay off. Not knowing if a big black marlin or a 50-60 lb. class cubera was going to grab my bait tends to keep me wide awake when I'm out there !!!!

Good Fishing, WHEREVER YOU ARE !!!

Capn Bob
