Bite still on in Lowcountry

Capt. Rick Percy
December 26, 2013
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

Even though the temperatures have dropped the water temps down into the low 50's, the bite continues to be pretty good in the rivers and creeks. Lots of reports of trout in the creeks, although many are having trouble finding fish over the 14 inch minimum size regulation. These fish are both in the deep creeks and on oyster points on the higher tides, and can be taken with live minnows or shrimp, as well as an assortment of soft plastic baits. You have to hunt for a while to find that school of keepers. Redfish are definitely schooled now, and the low water is the key to locating the schools on the flats. Stealth is critical, as these fish won't take a lot of pressure with out clamming up and moving. Live mud minnows and cut bait work fine. My favorite this time of year is a 4 inch Gulp! in Molten or New Penny, dead sticked with no weight on a 1/0 light wire circle hook. Put them in front of a moving school and hang on!
