Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

Our Cobia season is finally upon us. Water temperatures are hitting the 70 degree mark, and the bait and fish are just now starting to show in the Broad River. Several were caught last week, but the fish should pour into the sound and Broad River this coming week on some big tides we are having. My favorite method to catch them is sight fishing them on the surface. I try to stay in thirty to forty feet of water and cruise slowly on days when the river is slick. The fish tend to come to the surface and cruise and give themselves away with a small v shaped wake that is easy to spot once you get the hang of it. Throwing jigs with Gulp trailers works great. And the new Hogy flounder plastic bait is said to be awesome. If the river is choppy, then setting up with live herring on the bottom on sandbar drops is the method of choice. Chumming really ups the odds in your favor. Fun watching that rod bend to the water as a fish makes that initial run. These fish should be in good numbers in the sound and river until the middle of June.
