Great Spring trout bite

Capt. Rick Percy
June 8, 2017
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

After twenty seven years in the Lowcountry, we are having the very best spring trout bite I have seen. We have had 3 or 4 mild winters in a row, with water temperatures staying at 50 degrees or better. This has eliminated the fish kills we are use to seeing every other winter or so, and have allowed our trout to spawn a number of times. As a result we have better quantity and quality trout than ever. Our minimum size is 14 inches, and the other day on a trip we caught 19, with only 3 under the minimum. Several were in the 20 to 21 inch range. I expect the bite to stay strong this summer, and then become incredible this fall and winter. I have had my clients throwing Vudu shrimp under a popping cork, mud minnows or live shrimp when I can get them. Also have had good success with a Mirrolure 52MR808. Incoming tide with clean water flow in 3 to 5 feet of water has been the ticket.
