Mixed bite on Lowcountry Reefs

Capt. Rick Percy
August 1, 2013
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

Finally have had some decent weather the past two weeks and have made several trips to artificial reefs out of Port Royal Sound. Our reefs nearshore are in fairly shallow water, and my favorite averages from 12 foot on low water to 18 foot deep on the high. Clean water is a must for the reef to produce at its full potential. The species available is really mixed, and it is not unusual to catch the following: Speckled Seatrout, Weakfish, Black Sea Bass, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Bluefish, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, and Sheepshead. Black Drum are also available. My technique is very simple. A 3/4 ounce white bucktail (trimmed to the back of the hook), tipped with either a live mud minnow, finger mullet, live shrimp, or a dead shrimp all work. And if bait is not available, I tip with a 3 inch Gulp swimming mullet, in chartruese or white. If the seas are calm I use my trolling motor to keep clients on top of the structure, which I usually throw a marker on once I find where the fish are holding. Or I drift the drop. Either technique will produce fish. I like to move around the structure rather than anchor. Give it a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the numbers of fish that are on these nearshore structures.
