Redfish bite is on the flats

Capt. Rick Percy
February 13, 2014
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fished 3 days recently before our winter storm, and had pretty good success finding some nice Redfish schools on the flats during periods of low water. The fish were in schools of from 10 fish to 150. Our water is very clear right now, and you are able to them from quite a distance. Soft plastic scented baits have worked very well. A Gulp! shrimp in molten color, freelined with no weight or cork, has worked the best for me. It is best to target the outside edge of the school and let them move to the bait, moving it very slightly as they get close. I put the bait on a 1/0 Mutu light circle hook. A light rod with 20 lb Power Pro braid lets you cast the light bait the needed distance. And it doesn't make much noise entering the water. Stealth is a necessity in staying on these fish, as they are constantly keeping up their guard in case the dolphins come in on them. Lots of fun to catch a fish you can see.
