Redfish on the Broad River

Capt. Rick Percy
March 6, 2014
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

Had several trips the last two weeks of February when the weather permitted. The Redfish are still in survival mode, schooled up in big numbers and staying very shallow to avoid being eaten by our numerous bottle nose dolphins, or "Flipper". These fish are constantly on alert in the shallows, and stealth is required to get on them. One technique that has been successful is to locate fish on the low tide, and fish them on the nearby shells as the water comes in over them. The fish like to lay up on or near them, as they are dark colored and hold a little more heat than the surrounding bottom. If you can locate a shell that they are hanging around, you can float a mud minnow under a cork over the top of them and usually get a bite or two. I've also been throwing a Zman jerk bait on flutter hooks ahead of the schools and working them very slowly. Once you catch one or two you need to back off and leave them alone for a while, until they settled back down. Good fishing and tight lines!
