Reds on the flats

Capt. Rick Percy
March 4, 2016
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

We continue to have decent water temperature in the mid 50's. This has kept our Redfishing on the flats very consistent. Had a couple of trips the past week and have had good success fishing the schools on the last of the outgoing tide and dead low. Have been dead sticking 4 inch Molten Gulp Shrimp on a 3/0 flutter hook. By keeping the bait weedless, you can actually lay them up in the broken oyster shell without hanging up. Let them lay as the fish will pick them up off the bottom, and set the hook fairly hard to make sure the hook makes solid contact. Have also been using mud minnows on a 1/4 oz jig head the same way. Had 2 clients last Tuesday and they picked up 17 strikes, with the biggest fish at 30 inches and almost 11 pounds. The seatrout are also biting now in creeks on soft plastics in 8 to 10 foot of water. Fish slow and pay attention to your bait as they may not be hitting very hard yet.
