Summer fishing in the lowcountry

Capt. Rick Percy
July 27, 2014
Beaufort - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer brings higher water temperatures, and with it the bite can slow down a little, and that has been the case for the most part. Have done a little nearshore reef fishing this past month, with Bluefish, Black sea bass, Jack crevalle, and flounder the main targets. Mostly throwing bucktails tipped with gulps. And of course live finger mullet or mud minnows also produce outside. The tarpon have shown in full force now, and we are seeing fish almost every day. They hang around the menhaden schools, and it is quite a show when a 100 pounder blasts through a school of bait, showering pogies everywhere. Big Blacktips hang with them also. The inside Redfish bite has been in a little deeper water in the mouth of creeks and ditches draining the flats, as I am sure they are seeking a little cooler water that the extreme shallows.
