Winter Catfish on Fire

Capt. Darryl Smith
December 17, 2008
Santee - Freshwater Fishing Report

The catfish have finally gotten into there winter feeding frenzy here on the Santee Cooper Lakes. We are catching a lot of 20-40+ lb fish with smaller ones call Crack Fillers as well. Crack Fillers fill in the holes between the bigger catfish in the box. The fish are holding on the break lines coming off of the humps to the deeper water. Some days the magic number may be 25 feet the next day may be 40+ feet on the drops. We are drift fishing when we have wind and the days of no wind we are trolling. The bait of choice is cut Gizzard Shad. 25-40 fish days are regular and should go thru till March. We just boated a 96.4 lb blue catfish while filming a TV Show called "What a Catch". This is the time of year when the most fish around 100 lbs are caught. Look at the fish on our website www.captaindarryls.com
