Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake LBJ

This lake has just reached the optimum clarity and temperature for the great fishing it is known for and all of it's various inhabitants (largemouth, spotted bass, white bass and crappie) are showing definite signs of movement toward their annual spawn. LARGEMOUTH males have already moved very close to spawning areas and some are even preparing nesting beds for the females that will join them soon. Pitching piimpkin/chartreuse Terminator jigs or crawfish Creme Super Tubes under boat docks with a distinct breakline under it is very effective for some of the larger fish. On creek channel points with rip rap try a Devil's Tongue, shallow running crawfish crankbait or white/char. 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbait. Once the fish majority of the fish have moved to the beds a pumpkin/char. tail Zilla lizard or Devil's Tongue will take some of the heaviest bass of the year. Now is the time for a double digit bass. Virtually every species that swims in this lake are on the spawn. LARGEMOUTH up to 10 lbs. are moving toward spawing grounds along creek ledges in 3'- 6'. Crawfish 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps and 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits are the lures of choice. Over gravel flats a more subtile approach is necessary. Try a pumpkin/char. or watermelon Zilla lizard or Devil's Tongue after making a pass with faster moving lures such as a 'Trap. The SMALLMOUTH are also very good and at their heaviest right now. Look for submerged rock piles in 4'-10' of water and target these fish with chartreuse 1/8 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads or chartreuse Creme Super Tubes or Devil's Tongues. STRIPERS & WHITE BASS are in the upper end and over humps in the larger creeks. Vertically jigging Horizon Pirk Minnows & 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads are effective in the lake, but upriver casting or trolling a #1 or #3 Terminator In-Line spinner, chrome or Tenn. Shad Spin Traps or Tiny Traps will load the boat with both whites & stripers. If you never have tangled with a freshwater STRIPED BASS in the 8 to 15 lb. range, now is the time to book a trip on Buchanan. Stripers are roaming 18'-24' deep along main channels at midlake making ther way to the mouth of the Colorado River. Drifting live bait is the techniques most preferred, but trolling bucktail jigs on downriggers is also productive. LARGEMOUTH are moving in & out of flats around the upper islands and in Morgan & Beaver Creeks preparing for their spawn. Crawfish 1/4 or 1/2 oz. Rat-L-Traps, silver/blue/green Terminator spinnerbaits, Ice Tea or watermelon Devil's Tongues & Zilla lizards are all good. WHITE BASS are stacked up and moving up creek channels and toward the upper islands of the lake. Vertically jigging 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads, Horizon Pirk Minnows and 1/8 oz. Spin Traps are taking 20 to 50 fish per trip for our clients. To book your guide trip contact JR'S GUIDE SERVICE at (830) 833-5688 or email [email protected]
