Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
April 3, 2006
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Canyon Lake: Water clear; 67 degrees; 905.93':

Weather stability has improved, improving the spawning urge. April is the primary month for spawning and largemouth are now proving it. There is a good early morning "power fishing" bite from first light until midmorning. After that, successful, knowledgable anglers are slowing down to work the same areas with soft plastics such as wacky worms and tubes. Largemouth are along sloping gravel flats in 3'-12' of water using crawfish Rat-L-Traps, wacky rigged white Whacky Sticks, smoke-red flake Snap Back tubes and Daiquiri Dog Bones. Smallmouth are very good early and all day under cloud cover over rockpiles from 5'- 15' deep on smoke-red Snap Back tubes, JDC 3" Craws and Pumpkin Devil's Tongues on drop shots. Stripers are slow to fair jigging 1/2 oz. Pirk Minnows, swimming Spoiler Shads and trolling. White Bass are fair to good on chartreuse or white grubs, small Terminator In-Line spinners and 1/8 oz. Tiny Traps. Crappie are good on minnows at Cranes Mill fishing Pier. For lodging suggestions or to book a guided trip w/the only licensed, fulltime, professional guides fishing Canyon Lake contact JR's Guide Service (www.jrguideservice.com). Your most convenient source for live bait and tackle is Canyon Bait House (www.canyonbaithouse.com), 15605 Cranes Mill Rd., (830) 899-9747. **Canyon Bait House is the exclusive area dealer for JDC BAITS**

LBJ: Water clear; 67 degrees; 824.76' :

Stable weather patterns are encouraging an improved movement and activity level of bass in shallow, spawning areas. Power fishing is taking quality blacks early, but then most knowledgeable anglers are slowing down their presentations with soft plastics for success. Largemouth to 9+ lbs are good on flats in 2'-5' on watermelon-red twitch baits or weightless wacky rigged Whacky Sticks green pumpkin Snap Back creature baits and Rat-L-Traps. White Bass are fair to good trolling Terminator In-Line spinners, small crankbaits and casting 2" Spoiler Shads through schools. Crappie are fair to very good in 1'-3' on 1/32 oz. crappie tubes or jigs and live minnows. To book a guided trip with the only fulltime guide fishing LBJ for 45 years contact JR's Guide Service (www.jrguideservice.com). Call (830) 833-5688 or email: [email protected].
