Galveston Fishing Reports

Galveston Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report for Galveston, Texas

Our Galveston Fishing Guides are reporting some excellent Flounder Gigging and Redfish and Speckled Trout fishing for January. Of course, this time of the year conditions can be ever changing - so between front passages are the best windows of opportunity to have excellent success. During the passing of fronts, we can experience high winds with a north-westerly flow - which will drop water levels in our bays. When this happens, we have to change strategy and fish areas that are holding sufficient water depths but are adjacent to shallows that the fish will move to for feeding activity once water levels rise. At times, this can be very rewarding for large numbers of fish as well as quality. Other times, this can be a frustrating time if the fish get 'Lock-Jaw' and do not cooperate. Once the tides come back in, this is the best time for flounder gigging in Galveston as well as good fishing for redfish and speckled trout.

This past week, we had a group of guys that booked a Flounder Gigging Charter - and conditions were excellent. Winds were light, water clarity was excellent and the flounder were ever present. These guys gigged their full limits and had a grand time doing so. With only one of the three guys having ever gigged a flounder, they caught on well and were all experts within an hour. The flounder are being found along sandy bottoms, and bait fish presence is the key factor. These fish are moving back in to the bays from their annual Gulf Migration for spawning activities. As they travel back to where they call home for 11 months, we are intercepting them along sand flats where they are feeding on mullet and piggy perch.

We have many couples decide on a night time Flounder Gigging Charter for a 'date night'. This past week we have had a couple of these and had a great time on each of them! If you are looking for something fun to do for a night out with your better half - a Night Time Flounder Gigging Trip may be what you are looking for. Our Galveston Fishing Guides enjoy bringing couples and families out on Galveston Bay for an evening of fun!

Fishing in Galveston is very good right now for Redfish and Speckled Trout. The bull reds are being caught along the jetties and speckled trout and slot redfish are the targets in the Bays and Bayous. Live shrimp under a popping cork is the number one go to bait right now for speckled trout. Live mullet fished along bottom is a sure bet for good slot reds in the bayous of Galveston Bay.

The fishing outlook for Galveston is something great to look forward to. In the next month we will begin to see Bay Snapper (Sheepshead) begin staging along rock groins, oyster reefs, and pilings for their annual spawning activities. This is an amazing time to get out on Galveston Bay and fish for these incredible tasty fish.... not to mention the fun battle catching them. We target these fish with live shrimp, free lined or with just enough weight attached to compenate current flow. February thru late April or early May is the prime time to bag up some white, flaky fillets of Galveston Bay Snapper!
