Lake Ray Roberts Fishing Report

I took most of the first two weeks in June off for vacation so its been a month since my last report. The lake is 3 inches below normal level with temperatures in the low 80's and clear where the wind has not muddied it up. Largemouth bass fishing is good and we are catching the fish shallow around flooded willows for the most part. Have not found a good deep bite this summer and I am guessing it is because we have had so much wind that a therocline has not set up. Have been fishing 2 to 6 feet deep most of the time. Topwater bite is not consistent early but soft plastics will catch them very good all day long. Split shotting a Yum Dinger 4" junebug color is working well and Yum Houdini shad in watermelon red works good too. Carolina rigged blue pumkin french frie will catch them also. The wind has made it impossible to fish a lot of the good areas lately but have done OK fishing sheltered areas on the windy days.

Sand bass fishing is good with schooling going on mornings. A lot of the schooling fish are small with some good ones mixed in. Best areas been southwest of Wolf Island, Just north of Isle du Bois State Park and from the marina to the middle of the dam on the southwest corner of the lake. With the wind we have had it is really hard to see the schooling activity in the white caps but have found them every morning I have looked this week. The schooling activity will get better and bigger fish will be schooling in the next six weeks. Catching the schoolers on the "Floatin Thing" which is my variation of a topwater with a jig trailing behind it. A clear tiny torpedoe works good as well. In June normally the sand bass leave the deep water holes and suspend and cannot be caught on slabs. I have caught deep water fish this week everytime the wind let me get out on the big water. Most of the deep fish are good size and a few bonus catfish have been with them. Keep in mind it is nothing like April and May was for numbers but for summer it is good fishing and can help fill the ice chest. Still catch all the deep fish with a Cotton Cordell CC Spoon 3/4 oz. chrome with a Flies-By-Night fly tied 14 inches above the spoon.

Have fun fishing,

Tim
