LAKE RAY ROBERTS FISHING REPORT
Spring is almost here and the fishing is really getting good. Sand bass trips, since my last report, have really kept me busy having 7 trips in the last 10 days. All trips have produced easy limits of fish with the exception of last thursday. Thursday we had dense fog until noon and then it was a pretty day with no wind and the fish took the day off as we only put 18 in the boat. Torrey and Morgan who fished with me that day will be back in May for a free trip. I guarantee a fish fry of at least 30 fish on my white bass trips or you get another trip free. All other sand bass trips everybody caught lots of fish and went home with their limits of fillets on ice. Have had complaints on some of these trips of carpul tunnel from reeling in fish and not being able to eat lunch because the fish wouldn't quit biting. We have been catching all of these fish on Cotton Cordell CC Spoon 3/4 oz. chrome color with a chartreuse Flies-By-Night jig tied about a foot above the jigging spoon. This rig will catch 2 fish at a time when the fish are really active and George, fishing with Logan, Brad and me last friday morning caught 2 fish each time he dropped the lures to the bottom the first 4 times in a row. That's right, the first 4 times he cast the lures he put 8 big white bass in the boat. He now holds the record for consecutive doubles in my boat.We are catching all of the fish on main lake structure on the east arm of Lake Ray Roberts from the Isle du Bois State Park Cove to Wolf Island. Best bite has been 30ft. to 35ft. deep on drop offs on the structure spots. The water temperature had warmed on the main lake to 56 degrees before the cold front last friday dropped it to 52 degrees.
Largemouth bass fishing is really getting good with big fish moving into shallow grass feeding and starting to spawn. The cold front last friday moved some of them back out a little deeper as the water temperature dropped 6 to 10 degrees in the spawning areas but by now they should be moving back up. Spring bass fishing is a time when you can catch them on about whatever you want to throw at them. Have been using Rayburn Red Excaliber lipless crankbait, Booyah Boogie bait chartreuse and white, and Yum Dinger 4" weightless in Junebug color. Light weight carolina rig and light weight Yum Wooly Bug creature bait 4" June bug color have also worked the last 2 weeks.
